A periodical is any publication that comes out periodically (weekly, biweekly, monthly, etc.), such as a magazine, newspaper, or journal.

An academic journal is a periodical aimed at scholars, academics and researchers, written by experts on the subject and peer-reviewed. Peer-reviewed means that the articles in the journal are evaluated by a group of experts to check for quality and accuracy.
